I asked the participants in one of my recent online facilitation skills workshops to bring together E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G they had learned and present it all on one page.
Here is what they came up with:

1 cr.E.ate your space

It is not because we are online that the basic rules of the art of hospitality no longer count. Create a welcoming space. Have an appropriate welcoming screen and play music in the arrival room. Being off-camera is like sending your business card in and staying out yourself. Make sure that being on-camera is the default state for all participants. Have breakout spaces ready and make sure the participants can enter and leave them at leisure. Just like they would do if the meeting were in the office.

2 disco.V.er the social plane

On the tick of the clock, call everyone in and declare the meeting “open.”
Start the meeting with social discovery. Randomly shuffle the cards and bring people who wouldn’t otherwise speak to one another…
