The Bodhi Tree on the Ridge of Kent
(little walks for sinners and malfeasance)

There is a bodhi tree high up on the ridge of Kent that is difficult to forget. At noon or so I usually walk out of the office where I work and while thousands of other office workers swarm into the Mapletree Business City eateries and hawker centers like bees on the flowers of a chestnut tree, looking for a choice of laksas and soups and and broths and other succulent Singaporean, Korean, Indian, Vietnamese, and more Southeast Asian dishes, I set out for a hike.
We are on the coast at Pasir Panjang (“Long Beach”) and this is precisely where the hot streams of air from over the sea roll in and meet with the cooler shadows of the forests on the hills. The ridge also catches the rains.
Singapore is just one north of the equator. We have a tropical climate, with relatively high and not exactly but nearly uniform temperatures, abundant rainfall, and high humidity throughout the year. Most Singaporeans tell me there are no seasons at all on the island. But hear me out: this is most certainly a mistake, or it shows one’s indifference to keen observation of things going on around us.
